Simcenter STAR-CCM+
The flagship multiphysics CFD tool in the Simcenter suite — the software CFDWAYS uses daily for most of its industrial equipment simulation projects.
Why CFDWAYS chose STAR-CCM+
One unified platform
Import CAD, mesh, set up the physics, solve and post-process in a single environment, minimizing file transfers between packages and the errors they introduce.
Tightly coupled multiphysics
Flow, heat transfer, reactions, multiphase and particles are solved simultaneously, capturing how these phenomena interact in industrial equipment.
Automated option sweeps
Java macros and parametric models let you sweep whole families of design options instead of rebuilding the case every time.
Applications in real projects
Three groups of problems CFDWAYS commonly solves with STAR-CCM+, all taken from delivered projects:
- Flue-gas treatment — SOx removal (dry/wet FGD), NOx removal with SNCR: flow distribution, residence time, urea/ammonia droplet trajectories and removal efficiency
- Thermal & combustion equipment — combustion chambers, grate incinerators, HRSG: temperature fields, burnout, emissions
- Process equipment — spray dryers, bubble columns, cyclones, mixing tanks: multiphase, evaporation, particle separation
The physics models used most
- RANS turbulence (k-ε, k-ω SST) and LES for unsteady flow problems
- Convective, conductive and radiative heat transfer, with conjugate heat transfer (CHT)
- Multiphase: Lagrangian (droplets, particles), VOF (free surface), Eulerian multiphase
- Combustion and chemical reactions, with NOx emission models
- Motion: MRF and sliding mesh for fans, pumps and impellers

Applications at CFDWAYS
- Diagnosing underperforming equipment in operation: finding dead zones, flow skew and local overheating
- Comparing retrofit options by virtual testing before investing in fabrication, avoiding trial and error on site
- New designs: fixing dimensions, injector positions and flow direction at the concept stage
- Training and handover: building reference models the client's team can run afterwards
Licensing & support
CFDWAYS is a Software Partner of Siemens Digital Industries Software in Vietnam — we both distribute the licenses and use the software directly in our own projects.
- Power Session — paid by compute core, suited to running large cases in campaigns
- Power-on-Demand — rented by the hour, with no long-term commitment
- Annual license — for teams using it continuously
Included: engineering support during Vietnamese working hours, and a benchmark run on your own model before you decide to buy.
Send your model and CFDWAYS will run it and report the computation time on your current hardware.

Frequently asked questions
How is it different from FloEFD?
FloEFD is embedded in CAD and suits quick analyses at the design stage. STAR-CCM+ is far stronger on multiphysics, large meshes and complex industrial cases — at the cost of taking longer to master.
Will it run on an ordinary workstation?
Yes, for medium-sized models. Cases with tens of millions of cells belong on an HPC cluster. CFDWAYS estimates the configuration for your specific case before you invest in hardware.
How long does the training take?
The standard course gets an engineer to the point of setting up basic cases; for specialized problems CFDWAYS trains directly on your own model.
Is there support after purchase?
Yes — application engineers in Hanoi support everything from installation and HPC configuration to case setup.
Want to try STAR-CCM+ on your own problem?
Send the model and a description — CFDWAYS will run it and report the results together with the actual run time.
